Damn,
this place was cool.
Here's
one of he more recent craters.
Some
sulferous volcanic-type... stuff.
This
is one of the more active craters. That's Carl up there crouching in the
gas.
Probably not the brightest of ideas. But preety cool looking...
Posing
in front of a crater that blew back in ... 1950-something.
Some crazy colored rocks and the town of Oia behind.
We
finally got to the other side of this thing.
On the return trip, we stopped by some superheated hot springs. Not a
stretch, really,
considering the whole island is one huge volcano. But now we all know
that if it ever
erupts again, this church will probably be the first thing to go.
Well,
maybe not the first... those white dots on the cliff up there are actually
goats.
That's right... the volcanic center of a half-submerged island is inhabited
by goats.
Go figure.
The trip back from the Caldera was as stunning as the ride there was.
We
took a gondola up the cliff-side. Screw those roads.
Afterwards
we went to the east-most coast of the island... where the black sand beaches
were.
How romantic. On a secluded Mediterranian black sand beach, with just
the
two of us... and a massive oil liner.
We did find some time to make a cool -ass sand castle.
I've made lots of sand castles in my day... but this is the first made
with volcanic
sand and glass.
