We had a bit of trouble finding a place to stay
here. After finally figuring out which
bus would take us to the main part of the town, we located a few B&B's
that were already full up. But after a bit of walking (and Carl falling
off a sidewalk
wearing his full pack) we found quite a cool place. It was a Hostel /
American Bar.
Rooms upstairs, American style (i.e. lots of Hollywood and sports pictures
on the
wall) bar downstairs that was filled with tasty, cheap Belgian beers.
It was well worth
all the walking. So as you can see from this picture, we spent our first
night in Bruges
taking advantage of our newfound accomadations.
Next
morning we wandered out into the town. Here's the Markt, or the main sqaure.
Bruges is actually one of Europe's best preserved
medieval cities.
Bruges is an extremely ornate little place.
It's
absolutely gorgeous and turned out to be one of the highlights
of our trip.
There
are three huge tower structures in Bruges. Here's one,
the Belfort, or bell tower.
A
shot back on the Belfort. This is a pretty prototypical
picture of Bruges. It's sometimes called "The Little Venice"
because
of it's series of canals.
The
tower in the distance is actually a cathedral, the Onze
Lieve Vrouwekerk.
This
church is well-noted because it contains Michelangelo's
"Madonna and Child".
