We
moved on up the river toward another small town called Krems. We only
stayed
there for an evening and a night, so there weren't many pictures. But
here are a
bunch of the sights we saw along the Danube enroute to Krems.
The river is dotted with churches, castles and
other impressive buildings.
An
old abandoned fortress overlooks the river.
The river valley is also abundantly lined with
vineyards, like the one above.
The hills are cut into and terraced. This area is renowned for it's wines.
Another small river village. This one has a bus.
On
the hill behind this monastary are the remains of a fortress. It was in
the
dungeons of this castle where Richard the Lionheart was held after his
capture returning home from the Crusades.
Although
the detainment was long, it did not prevent Sean Connery from
attending Kevin Costner and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio's wedding.
After
our excursion along the Danube, we arrived back in Vienna. The original
plan
here was to go north to Praque and then Berlin before returning south
to Italy. But
complications with our rail passes arose as we tried to book a train into
the Czech
Republic, so we were forced to regroup and come up with a new plan. It
unfortunately
involved cutting Praque and Berlin out of the trip. Next time... next
time. Over a dinner
of Subway subs that weren't really Subway subs, Carl came up with a breakneck
plan
to get to Greece by cutting through Hungary and Serbia, thus allowing
us to hit Greece
first and come up the boot of Italy from the south so as not to have to
retrace our steps.
But then those same complications with the rail passes arose once more.
So we said screw it and jumped on a train to Venice.
