You
know, for a building that's supposed to be focused on the Lord,
it seems to be pretty focused on decoration...
Oh, and GOLD. I love goooold...
No,
in all seriousness, this place was frigging amazing.
We tried to go to alot of churches and cathedrals
and such, mostly because they're
usually such powerful and beautiful examples of art and architecture.
But this place
I think made the overall top 5. Up there with St Peter's in Rome, the
York Minster and
the Domo of Sienna just to name a few.
Check out the posed skeleton of a saint in the
glass windowed casket. That is an
actual saint's sketeton actually posed like that. I don't recall which
saint is was as I
was too wierded out by the whole thing.
Check
out this awesome shot down a spiral staircase.
Faith
has had enough of all these churches!
Carl
set up this shot while in the monastary restroom to illustrate
the modernness of the facilities. So why does he look surprised,
then? Because he thinks he's cool.
This
is probably the best shot of Melk itself, as it illustrates how
the massive monastary looms over the small town. Quite a cool place.
And it was here that we were first introduced to "sturm" (pronounced
sch-turm),
a type of early-stage fermented wine that can only be found in Austria
that this
particular time of year. To say that sturm is tasty is like saying David
Hasslehoff
has some unintentional comedy value. It's just an understatement.
