A
short 4 hour train ride later, we arrived in Athens. When we were in Rome
we got the
lowdown on a good place to stay. The Student and Traveller's Inn in Plaka
Square. We were
forewarned that Athens was a big dirty craphole, although this little
area was touristy and nice.
Turned out to be excellent advice. With the exeption of Plaka, there was
no other area of
the city that we felt even remotely safe walking around in at night. So
we ended up having a great
time in Athens. Had we stayed in a shithole, it would have been a different
story altogether.
Here Jackie, Skye
and Faith enjoy a few beverage while readin up on the islands.
This
guy's name was James. He was from Scotland and was our roomate for
the couple of days we were in Athens. Nice guy.
Next
day, next day, next day. We hit the sights in earnest. That mighty structure
is the Acropolis. All that stone lying in front on the ground there is
stuff they're continuing
to dig up..
Look...
over yonder! Rocks and a dirty sprawling city.
Carl
surveys the ruins of this amphitheater...
... and then discretely pees on it. (You thought I'd get sick of the pee
jokes in Ireland, didn't you.)
A
shot of the amphitheater from higher up on the Acropolis.
Here's the main entrance - the Propylaea.
And
here's the Parthenon.
This
thing is ginormous. How even this much of it is still standing is beyond
me.
A
look back over the city from the top of the hill.
A
look at a sphinx statue in the Acropolis Museum..
This place was crammed full of cool stuff.
